The 2009 American Music Awards is bringing music fans every where a cornucopia of music and tunes to satisfy the needs of all.  Janet Jackson kicks of this years proceedings with a stunning opening performance.  Her now deceased brother Michael Jackson is nominated for 5 awards.

Dick Clark Productions President Orly Adelson announced that Janet Jackson will kick off the 2009 "American Music Awards" with a special opening medley of her greatest hits. She will join other previously announced acts including Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Green Day, Shakira, Lil' Wayne, Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Adam Lambert. Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. The show will be broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22 (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC. Miley CyrusJanet Jackson has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling artists in contemporary music. For the first time ever, 33 of her global No. 1 hits, plus the newly recorded single, "Make Me," will be available on one album-"Number Ones." Set for release on November 17, "Number Ones" celebrates the career and artistry of one of the most successful and influential artists in music history. Among the album's many highlights is new single "Make Me," which was produced by Janet and Rodney Jerkins.

"We're thrilled about having Janet Jackson open this year's show," said American Music Awards producer Larry Klein. "She is an incredibly dynamic performer and I think the audience will be excited to see what she has in store."

This will mark the fourth time Janet Jackson has performed on the American Music Awards, having previously performed "Control" in 1987, "Escapade" in 1990 and "Together Again" in 1998. Jackson is also a nine-time American Music Award winner, having won the award for Soul/R&B Single for "Nasty," as well as for Soul/R&B Video Female in 1987. Her hit "Miss You Much" garnered two nods in 1990 for Dance Single and Soul/R&B Single, and in 1991 she took home the prizes for Dance Artist, Pop/Rock Female and Soul/R&B Female. Jackson also earned an AMA in 1999 for Soul/R&B Female and in 2002 for Pop/Rock Female.

For the third year, winners will be determined by online voting at www.ama.abc.com, www.amavote.com and www.mycokerewards.com. Artists will be honored in the categories of Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin and Contemporary Inspirational. For the first time ever, dcp will stream a live pre-show on the red carpet for the 2009 "American Music Awards" on November 22nd, 2009 at 3:00 PM (PT) / 6:00 PM (ET). The "Official AMA Pre-Show," will feature hosts Julie Moran, Jenni Pulos, Jai Rodriguez and Taryn Southern as well as the winner of the ongoing national competition to become a red carpet correspondent at the 2009 AMA's.
