Dancing with the StarsDancing with the Stars
Performance Recap For Nov. 9, 2009
by Sammi-T

Hello and welcome to Week Nine of Dancing With The Stars! Last week we said goodbye to Michael and Anna and Mark and Lacey, narrowing the field down to only five dancers. This week each couple will dance two dances---one ballroom and one Latin.

This week as the couples descend down the stairs, it looks as if they are all going to senior prom. Even Tom and Samantha look like they should be in a gym dancing to some cheesy song about memories and being friends forever.

The judges talk about the couples strengths and weaknesses before Mya and Dmitry  take the stage with their quickstep.  She wants to prove herself and go back on top.  They go horseback riding to unwind and get away.

The dance was very nice, good solid footwork and well executed. It is nearly flawless!

Len says he could find nothing wrong with it.

Bruno says that this is quality.

Carrie Ann tells her she made it flow with ease and grace.

Scores: 9-10-10=29 out of 30!

Aaron and Karina are next with their foxtrot. He talks about how badly he wants to win it.  She is sick this week, but is determined to work through it. They dance with masks on and she wears a hat and scarf .

Ok, so maybe Karina doesn’t look like she is on her way to the prom. The dance is very smooth and clean but he is a bit stiff again this week.

Bruno thinks it was a bit tense and did not sell the foxtrot.

Carrie Ann calls them out on a lift and gives him some pointers to improve.

Len says he made him proud.

Scores: 7-8-8=23 out of 30.

The next couple to dance is Joanna and Derek. They watch Mya’s videos to see what they are up against. They are determined to beat her.

The dance has them running and flying. It is a bit messy, but still a fun dance.

Carrie Ann likes the content and frame, but nitpicks on a few things.

Len tells her this is not the standard for the quarter finals.

Bruno tells her she looks like she is running away from a crime scene.

Scores: 8-7-8=23 out of 30.

Kelly and Louis are next with their foxtrot. Kelly keeps getting distracted, so Louis tries to take them away---even her cute animals!

Taking away her distractions is well worth it though because that foxtrot was incredible! Gorgeous, well executed and nearly perfect.

Len says she brings grace and elegance to the floor.

Bruno appreciates her keeping her focus, which he thinks helps her,

Carrie Ann says she is in a class by herself.

Scores: 8-8-9=24 out of 30.

Donny and Kym have the Viennese Waltz this week.  They want to make up for him being sick last week so they work twice as hard.

The dance is beautiful, elegant and everything a Viennese waltz should be. I tip my hat off to them.

Bruno compares it to a Lifetime movie.

Carrie Ann calls it mesmerizing.

Len thinks it was arty farty.

Scores: 9-8-9=26 out of 30.

Before we get to the Latin round, we are treated to a pro dance that gives us a preview of what we are  about to see.  We also get more commentary from the judges. Don’t hate me, but I flip to the Steelers game during this.  For those who care, at this point, the score is 7-3 Steelers, which will make all my guy friends and most of my co-workers very happy. (and me as well, since I am a fan myself.)

Mya and Dmitry have a 70s samba. She wants to channel Diana Ross and Cher, but quips that she is channeling Raggedy Ann. It takes them a bit longer to come up with a routine, which makes them nervous.

The dance is fun, exciting and would make any seventies fan proud. It was perfect, no question.  The footwork, the costumes, the showmanship….everything! Although I mist say, Dmitry looks like an extra on  That 70s Show.

Carrie Ann believes she wants to win.

Len loves it too, calling her hips naughty.

Bruno screams and for some reason sings ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’  making Tom compare him to Diana Ross and a strangled cat at the same time.

Scores: triple 10s for a 30!

Aaron and Karina have a 90s samba. He thinks it is perfect since it is when he grew up. He will incorporate some of his old moves into it. This can be very good or very bad.

OK, so I was wrong with the song choice, and I am very grateful for that.  The dance looks NOTHING like he did back in the day, but it is still a very good, solid performance. They had a lot of basic samba moves with their own twist on it.

Len thinks he sold it.

Bruno is glad he was wrong and it was NOT a disaster.

Carrie Ann calls him a truly great performer.

Scores: triple 9s for a 27 out of 30.

Aaron says he was going to vomit so Derek gives him a bag.

Joanna and Derek have a futuristic paso doble. They have fun with it, despite being stressed about having to learn two routines.

If they go on tour this year, they HAVE to add this. There is no option. This is the best routine the show has ever had—even better than Drew and Cheryl’s paso doble, heck, even better than Joey and Edyta’s quickstep, which is saying A LOT since I am love Joey Lawrence more than what is probably healthy! Awesome routine, nice costumes, perfectly in synch---nothing wrong with it at ALL!  Words cannot describe how incredible this is. If this isn’t the encore, I am going to be very mad!

Bruno calls Derek a genius.

Carrie Ann calls them out on a lift but calls it outstanding.

Len was genius and loves the content.

Scores: 9-10-10=29 out of 30.

Tom says that in the future we will dance well but look ridiculous and yes, I was right about the tin foily look.

Kelly and Louis have a 60’s jive. She loves this era so she is very excited about it. She did a 60s themed music video, so she wants to incorporate it into the routine.

First of all, the costumes are awesome. I can totally see my friend Lauren wearing that wig because she is just awesome like that. The routine is amazing too. The footwork is fast and in synch, the tricks are incredible and the bit with the doll and Bruno was cute.

Len calls her a revelation coming in stronger and stronger.

Bruno hugs her and tells her how great it was.

Carrie Ann thinks it was one of her best dances.

Scores: 8-9-9 for a 26 out of 30.

Donny and Kym end the night with an eighties paso doble. He insists on wearing a mullet which I think is stupid, unless your name is Billy Ray Cyrus since he is the only one who can pull it off.

The outfits scare me a bit, but the routine itself is very good.  There were some crazy moves, but it still held my attention.  There is something very captivating about it.

Len calls it a crazy bizarre and scary paso doble but he liked it.

Bruno says no one can top this and makes some comment about drag queens.

Carrie Ann thinks it was a good job bringing the era back but it was a bit much.

Scores: triple 8s for a 24.

FINAL LEADERBOARD
Mya and Dmitry: 59
Joanna and Derek: 52
Kelly and Louis: 51
Donny and Kym: 50
Aaron and Karina: 50

We get recaps of dancing and scores before we are reminded to vote for who we want in the semi finals.

Tune in tomorrow for Dancing with the Stars and Susan Boyle, Michael Buble and our results. Goodnight!
