So You Think You Can DanceSo You Think You Can Dance
Dance Champion Crowned

Tonight, LIVE, Fox' So You Think You Dance Season Finale opens with the art gallery group dance from earlier this season—the one to “Brand New Day” from The Wiz.  It’s the So You Think You Can Dance Top 20, and it’s funny how some of these people I’ve missed, and some I’m struggling to remember their names.

Cat looks awful purty, and tells us that last 21.6 million votes were cast for America’s Favorite Dancer.  At the judges’ table we have Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, and of course Mary and Nigel.  A “highlight” reel of this season’s auditions, Vegas week, the top twenty, etc..

The judges have chosen their favorite routines of the season for us to see again.  Adam’s is the first of the season, which Phillip and Jeanine danced to “Mad,” choreographed by Napoleon and Tabitha.  And now I can’t look away from Jeanine, and when this first was on, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t look away from Phillip.  It’s a good routine, and nice to see it again.

Nigel’s favorite is Jeanette and Brandon’s tango, which is awesome.  They seem a bit more cautious and less intense than they did the first time.  I’m wondering if it’s the big stage, or just that Brandon’s had a few other things to worry about this past week.

Debbie’s favorite moment from the season is a waltz by Louis Van Amstel, danced by Asuka and Vitolio.  That was an excellent dance, though I had forgotten it already.  It is amazing, the way he can throw her tiny little self around so easily and gracefully. The whole dance is very smooth and flowy, as it was the first time.  Lovely.

Mary’s choice is Travis’ piece for Jason and Jeanine… the “smoocheroni” as Cat calls it, Jeanine told us last night was not choreographed.  This is my 2nd favorite of the season.  I have it bookmarked on YouTube.  And indeed, they do kiss again.  And how.

Mia’s favorite routine of the season is a samba from the first show, danced by Kayla and Max.  I had completely forgotten Max existed.  But I do remember that pink dress.  I wish I could do latin ballroom.  It looks like so much fun!

We haven’t seen Evan reprise anything yet.  The Butt dance, perhaps?

On Sunday, the final four were surprised with an evening out.  They are greeting by Kherington from last season, and their surprise is that they get to be the first to see Kherington’s new movie FAME.  Oh, that’s awesome. It comes out September 25th.  Apparently Debbie Allen is also, and appropriately, in the movie.  She says they’ve wanted to remake the film for ten years, and she thinks the time is right to inspire a new generation to invest in arts education.  And Debbie even says, “you want fame, well fame costs, and right in here is where you start paying, in sweat.”  Niiiice.

Debbie introduces another routine, a group routine choreographed by Dmitri, Napoleon and Tabitha.  It’s the top 16, and “I Know You Want Me.”  I missed this one the first time.  But I did hear about it—the girls dancing in water.  And again, I wish I could do latin ballroom.  Oooh, I like it! I’m glad I got to see it.  Spicy.
The next guest is a young ballerina, the winner from Australia’s So You Think You Can Dance.  In a piece choreographed by Sonia,  her name is (I think) Talia something.  They didn’t put it on the screen.  I could have told you this was Sonia’s even without them telling me.  It’s a little weird, and jerky and strange.  It’s very good though.  I like the way she moves.

Lil C’s choice is “Jai Ho,” with Caitlyn and Jason.  I’m glad to see Jason again, I’m not glad to hear Lil C just talk nonsense more.  I didn’t like this as much as everyone else originally.  And again, as back then, I don’t feel that they are really together.  Individually they each do well, but they don’t give ethe moves the same emphasis, and they’re not exactly in sync.  And the kiss at the end?  Not as good at Jeanine and Jason.

Now the Top 4 takes the stage…  Evan is wearing his outfit from the Butt dance.  But results first.  Fourth place goes to…  Kayla.  Did not expect that.  At all.  But I guess not unexpected really, considering Evan’s phenomenal popularity.  She says she’ll most remember working with the choreographers, especially Mia.  Butt kisser.  She says she’ll miss everyone, and they all have something special.  That’s nice.  But she will get to go on tour with all of them.

Adam introduces another dance, this time it’s Mia’s.  It’s the Butt Dance.  I think I like it better this time.  I don’t know why.  Interesting.

Mary’s turn. She picks a Paso Doble.  From last night.  Jeanine and Brandon.  I’m not as anxious watching it as I was last night, but it also seems a little less intense on their parts.  I’m sure they’re exhausted.

Cat keeps them onstage and calls Evan out to join them.  Time to announce 3rd place.  And, third place goes to…Evan.  That’s just about right, and Nigel worked awfully hard to ensure that.  Evan’s adorable James Van der Beek self gets his goodbye video.  He thanks the fans and his family, saying it has been an amazing journey.  He will remember as much as he can and take everything and everyone with him.

Nigel introduces another “favorite moment.”  He says one of his favorite moments was when Mary admitted to using Botox. She freaks out for him ruining a perfectly lovely classy evening.  Hilarious.  He gets on with it, bringing out MY favorite dance of the season, Mia’s addiction piece for Kayla and Kupono.  I always thought this song was about a lover… and it makes so much sense to be about addiction.  But I guess it could be both. Addictions could be all kinds of things, after all.

Next we have Tiffany Burton’s choreography of the Rage Boys Crew.  This is the bunch of kids in jeans and blazers.  Very cool. They’re so good. And some are so tiny!  Although the tiniest? Not so good as cute.  Not bad, of course.  The older ones are really strong dancers.   Cat comes up to them in a jacket afterwards and asks if she can be in the crew. They’re not stupid so they say yes.  “Anymore girls in the crew?” She asks, and gets a resounding NO.  The cute little one has lost his front tooth after doing a back handspring off his couch.

Tyce gets to introduce a dance finally.  It’s a Doriana Sanchez disco, from Brandon and Janette.  Yay!  They were so very good together.  What a perfect couple, and who would have ever predicted that at the beginning of the season.

One more repeat dance from the season, and Mia will introduce it.  She has chosen the breast cancer routine by Tyce, danced by Melissa and Ade.  Tyce tells us that his friend, for whom he choreographed this, has learned today she is cancer free.  Wow.  He loves you Michelle.  I just love the moment where Melissa dives into Ade’s arms.  That wouldn’t have worked as well with just any couple.  These two were amazing together.  Christina Applegate, also a breast cancer survivor, cries in the audience.  I really think I liked that one better this time, too.

The top 8 dancers are back to do “One.”  How can Melissa and Ade be there already?  Fast change.  And then the judges, y’all.  Just for the last few seconds, but cute.  I wish they’d do a whole routine; I’d like to see who still has chops.

Okay, here we go.  Results time.

Jeanine and Brandon are on stage, Jeanine in a great black cocktail dress, Brandon in jeans.  We get a combination goodbye video for the two of them.  And the winner of Season Six, America’s Favorite Dancer, is…

Jeanine.

Yay, Jeanine!  She cries, of course, and says she never thought that auditioning would lead her to such amazing people.  She thanks the Academy. She’s so cute.  She thanks her mom for pushing her, and that she loves her. Cat asks her what she’ll remember most, and she says, this moment, also the other dancers, and her smoocheroni piece with Jason, and Cat is number four.  Everything was amazing, she loves us all.

Well, then.  That’s it for another season of So You Think You Can Dance.  Jeanine only gets to be the favorite for a short time, because we start Season Six in five weeks. Thanks for spending the season with me - see you in September -  Good night!

I was so happy when Jeanine won! But I'm not going to lie, Kayla was my first choice. She has such an amazing talent, and she's been so consistent, I don't understand how Evan beat her out :/ But still, congratulations to Jeanine! (: She earned it!
