So You Think You Can DanceSo You Think You Can Dance
Recap, 14 become 12

Welcome to So You Think You Can Dance! Tonight we will again say goodbye to one guy and one girl, narrowing the field to twelve and getting one step closer to naming America’s Favorite Dancer…

The group dance tonight (my favorite part of each week) is choreographed by Tyce Diorio and is to “Brand New Day” from The Wiz. It is a story of art coming to life after the museum closes. I love these group dances… the dancers seem to really enjoy them and there’s no pressure. The costumes in this one are really cool, too, very creative and varied.

We start giving the results with two couples onstage: Vitolio and Karla and Evan and Randi. Cat tells us one couple will be safe and one in danger. V & K have been in the bottom three every week, while R & E have NEVER been in the bottom three. However, last night, V & K got more love from the judges than R & E… have the tables finally turned? Nope. R & E are safe, and Vitolio and Karla will dance for their lives.

Three couples onstage this time. Janette/Brandon, Kayla/Kupono, and Melissa/Ade.

Just for fun, try explaining to someone that doesn’t watch the show what the Hot Tamale Train is.

Janette and Brandon: the judges love them. Did America? Yes, they are safe. Kayla and Kupono, the judges’ other favorite… will find out after we look at Ade and Melissa, who danced SYTYCD’s first classical ballet routine. Which couple is safe? Wow, Melissa and Ade. Not that I don’t love them, but I am surprised Kupono and Kayla are in danger, they were really good last night. There is no doubt at all in my mind they will be here next week, the judges do have the power. Something Mia flat out SAYS to them right here, before they even get to solos. Okeeee.

The last two couples are on stage: Phillip and Jeanine; and Jason and Caitlyn. The judges did not love Caitlyn and Jason’s alien love affair, but they nearly fell over themselves making out with Phillip and Jeanine. One is safe, one is in danger. Did America follow the judges? Nope! Caitlyn and Jason are safe and Phillip and Jeanine have their first trip to the bottom three. Nicely done America, way to stick it the jidges.

Special guests this week are from Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Wow, that woman was in a squatted plie on her TOES forever. True to the name, it is a contemporary/ballet dance, and it doesn’t draw me into its story or emotion but I am awed by what these people can do with their bodies. As a certified first-class klutz, it truly amazes me what talented people can do with such control. Really impressive.

Solo time! We start with Karla. She is MUCH better than she was last week, it seemed much more thought was put into it, and it felt more emotional for her. Vitolio. Dancing to “Here Comes Goodbye,” which seems like he might be facing the reality that Nigel promised him last week: he’s gone if he’s in the bottom three again. The dance itself is better than what we’ve seen from him before, in my opinion, but I’ve always liked him. Kayla. Who is no more going home than I’m the Queen of England. But here she goes, dancing to “Stupid” by Sarah McLachlan. Seems like a lot of kicking to me, but she’s not really in danger so not a big deal if her solo isn’t amazing. Kupono, whose movement seems very fluid to me.

After a break, we’re back for Jeanine. I don’t know what to say about her. It was nice to see her dancing her style, since we haven’t yet, and she certainly didn’t just get out there and “do something” as some dancers have done. I fear for Karla. Phillip is next, and we all know that he does his thing with ridiculousness. I’m not sure joints and bones are supposed to move that way.

While the judges deliberate, we get to hear a performance from Kelly Clarkson, singing “I Do Not Hook Up.” Darn, I wanted her to do “Already Gone,” but I like this song too. It’s a nice change from the usual guests—just her and the band, doing their thing, no “production.” I heart Kelly Clarkson.

Results! Girls first. They are unanimous, Nigel tells us, and asks Jeanine to step forward. He tells her that it has been difficult to stand out next to someone as unique as Phillip, but she gave the strongest solo and was brilliant. She is safe. Well there is NO question that Karla is going home. No suspense here. Kayla steps forward. She is without question one of the judges and choreographers’ favorites. However, her solo was static and had a lot of kicks (ha, I called it) and not really dancing from the heart. Karla is without question a very good dancer, but somehow she hasn’t captured the star quality they thought she had. Consequently, she’s out. Kayla goes to hug her immediately. Cat hugs her as well, and we see her goodbye video.

Guys are next. Nigel says again they are unanimous, and they start with Phillip. He is without question (Nigel’s favorite phrase tonight) unique and exceptional. Tonight he was a little desperate, but he’s phenomenal. He still has a lot of hard work to do on other genres, but he’s going to get that chance, he is safe. Vitolio is next. He always presents himself brilliantly, and has great presence on stage. But he doesn’t really deliver at the end of the day. Kupono gave a weak solo, you cannot just stand on stage and expect to dance for your life. They want more passion from anyone that is going to be on the show, and they expect to see that next week. He is safe. Vitolio is gone.

Asuka is in the audience, crying for her former partner. Vitolio’s goodbye video makes me cry, because I’m a sucker for his story and his smile.

Now we’re done to 12. See you next week!
