Nashville Star
Nashville Star
Pop goes Country

The contestants are lined up onthe Nashville Star stage.  Tommy is asked to step forward.  Then Gabe.  One is among the top vote-getters, the other in the bottom two.  Tommy is in the bottom two.  Hmm. I thought he'd have a pretty strong following.  So Gabe will sing first.

Get ready, America, for Nashville Star!!!!

Tonight the singers will be singing pop songs, and we start off with a group sing of "Like a Prayer."  Interesting choice.  Melissa starts off the song, and she's so totally my favorite.  When the whole group joins in, it's not so good. I'm going to skip it, it's not why we're here.  The random unidentified woman in the crowd throws us to commercial.  Are they ever going to introduce her to us?

Last week the judges met with the finalists to talk about how this is serious, and how they need to step up to the plate.  Tommy Stanley refers to himself in the third person.  Melissa is concerned cause she's a country singer, not a pop singer.  John's taking his group to his bar in Nashville.  Jeffrey's taking his group to his recording studio.  Jewel's taking her group to LA cause she's doing Leno.

Billy Ray really does not come across very naturally when he's reading the prompter.  Gabe is excited to sing his pop song, and he's chosen "Livin' la Vida Loca."  Oh my.  He's trying to bring out some charisma and stage presence.  This works as a country song, oddly.  And there are backup dancers. Which... no.  But it's pretty good.  Jeffrey wants him to loosen up some, but liked it.  John thinks he pulled it off, and turned his Texas on.  Jewel liked it too.

I am not loving the backup dancers.  At all.

Next is... Pearl Heart, doing "Love Shack."  They have really been working on letting their lead singer be a lead singer, and have more confidence.  It's interesting as a country song, with the twangy three-part harmony, it sounds bluegrassy.  They do most of the song together, not so much of the middle girl singing alone.  But she still is doing that uncomfortable-looking dance-like move, but it's much better than last week.  I'm just ignoring the backup dancers.  John thought it was great, his only thought was that they look at each other too much instead of working the crowd.  Jewel thought it was good too, but it was cheating a little and overprotecting the middle girl who is too afraid to be out there.  Jeffrey agrees.

Next is Alyson Gilbert, the Reba lookalike. She's doing "I Think We're Alone Now," which takes me back to eighth grade faster than anything other song in the world.  She wasn't good the first week, but was awesome the next, so they're looking for consistency from her.  John wants to speed it up, but Alyson wants to slow it down.  She kind of settles in the middle, which defeats the whole purpose of the tempo change in the first place.  She looks really uncomfortable on stage.  I think she should've gone fast, and rocked it out the way John wanted her to.  Jewel wondered if her shoes were uncomfortable, because she seems awkward on stage.  Jeffrey thinks she's Jekyll and Hyde, and too much pop in his country.  John seemed to hate it, she didn't do anything with it, it was vanilla.

So poor Tommy Gilbert is waiting through the whole show knowing he's in the bottom two. Which makes me think he'll be safe and the other bottom two person will go home.

Next to sing (and therefore safe) is Ashlee Hewitt, doing Britney's "You Drive Me Crazy."  John wants her to work on her stage presence, because she doesn't look right or left when she performs.  She's got great hair.  She slows it down, it's interesting, but it's not outstanding.  I like her, though, she seems serious and talented and dedicated more than some of the others to me.  I agree with John's comment last week that she's sort of Jewel-ish.  Jewel liked it.  Jeffrey thought she seemed a little uncomfortable, but that she has the goods and she needs to let it show.  John is impressed because she's getting better consistently every week.

Next to avoid elimination is Coffey, doing Rhianna's "Umbrella."  This should be interesting.  He's singing it for Savannah, his daughter.  He pronounces his name "caw-fay."  He's doing this annoying thing where he speaks between the lines of the song, the way people do when they're giving the lyrics to the crowd so the crowd can sing along, but it's just one word here and there.  I like it better when he's just singing.  Feels like he's looking for his style, it doesn't feel genuine.  The crowd goes nutso though, which feels staged.  Jeffrey's not on the train.  John says this is the guy he liked right off the bat at the first auditions.  Jewel appreciates his bringing his heart, but warns him against gimmicks, and says he talked at the end of every single phrase and that he should pick his moments.  Jewel and I are seriously likethis.

Next are Laura & Sophie, doing Michael Jackson's "PYT."  Huh.  The girls are not thrilled with the choice, and I'm not sure they even know the song.  He manages to get them excited about it.  The competition has been a stress on their friendship, and they have to work their butts off, they say.  They are wearing some seriously square-dance ready dresses.  And I can hardly recognize the song until they get to the chorus.  I have to admit, I just don't care for these two.  I haven't since the beginning, and I'm not sure why.  Jeffrey liked it, John liked it except when they sing in unison, and Jewel thinks they look like cupcakes and that they're lucky to have Jeffrey as their mentor.

Now Dannity Kane is going to sing.  I don't know what to think about them doing this show.  They're not country.  In fact, I'm not going to recap it, they're not why we're here.

Okay, the next singer to be safe is Shawn Mayer.  The singers must be able to see the graphic with their names, because every time they've announced a singer, that person has visibly reacted before Billy Ray calls their name. She's doing N*Sync's "Bye Bye Bye."  John is worried about it, and it's risky, and last week she was risky too. John says she's ballsy.  It's not THAT much different from the original, but I like it actually.  Shawn actually (sort of) dances with her backup dancers, which is cool.  It's interesting.  Jewel was shocked and says she really pulled it off.  Jeffrey didn't think it was very country, and wants to see the real her.  John thinks that the most country thing about her is that she's not scared of anything. She wasn't perfect, but he thinks it's good that she's not scared to take chances.

So we're down to two singers, one of whom will join Tommy in the bottom two.  Melissa or Justin.  These two singers should not EVER be mentioned in the same sentence.  Joining Tommy in the bottom two is Justin. Thank the good Lord.

Melissa will sing next, doing "True Colors."  John thinks it's a good choice, and that she can "for real" sing. She's having trouble making it a country song.  She's got a beautiful, clear voice, and she's right, the song doesn't song remarkably outright country, but if Trisha Yearwood did this song nobody would claim that it wasn't country.  Jewel thinks she's a great country singer.  Jeffrey wants to know what happened to her, because she looks like she's lost a ton of weight. She says she's lost 67 pounds.  Wow.  He says the performance was a 10.  John says the people he likes to work with are not just great singers, but great artists, and tonight she showed America she's a true artist.

It's Justin versus Tommy for elimination... did America go for form or fashion?  Style or Substance?  First we have to listen to them both sing.

Justin's doing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."  Jewel is trying to help him find control of his voice.  She's worried about him choosing this song.  Huh.  He should really perform without his shirt on, that would help significantly, I do believe.  It's definitely country, and he's doing a not bad job of it.  But he also looks a little nervous, and I've heard better singers at karaoke.  Take the shirt off, Justin.  John thinks it's the best Justin's done so far, and he actually sounded country.  Jeffrey thought he did a good job.  Jewel was really proud of him, and hopes it's not too late.

Tommy Stanley's doing "Maniac."  Jewel wants him to make it as country as he can.  It's a tough one to make country.  It starts out with just piano, and it sounds like a rock ballad, not really country.  He has a lot more stage presence than Justin, but the song isn't country.  Jeffrey's country bone wasn't going.  John thought he sang it great but it wasn't country.  Jeffrey tells him he should use his guitar.  Jewel says Justin out-countried him, and Johns says he shouldn't let anyone out-countrify him.  Is "countrify" an actual word?  I'm thinking no.

Here we go... the person America is sending home is...

Justin.

Billy Ray asks him what he would have done differently, and Justin basically says he would've been better.  Billy Ray says Justin's going to be a big movie star.  Not a country singer, a movie star.

Jewel is proud of his improvement.  John doesn't think he's a great country singer, but for him to keep at it, he'll be a star at something.

That's it, America... are you going to miss Justin?  Are Laura & Sophie better than I'm giving them credit for?  Is Melissa the best thing ever?
