MAD MEL SAVES THE WORLD

WHY DID YOU WRITE MAD MEL SAVES THE WORLD?

Every day there's some news which makes your head ache, so Erich Rausch (the brilliant composer and lyricist) and I wanted to create a fun theatrical experience that would take an audience out of our world and into another one - Marradia. Creating a sci fi musical is a unique challenge because you want to appeal to genre fans while not alienating traditional musical theater audiences. But in theater, you have to keep reinventing and reimagining to keep up with people's increased demand for something different.  I think we found that, blessed with a great, great cast who rock on a score from pop to rap, along with two amazing choreographers, Richard Rivera and Bernard Prince Thomas; Bernard is an original Voguer and will bring that artistry to a few scenes. And we also indulge in some gentle political satire -- just for humor. I know, what a notion nowadays.

WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM?

I've created a whole Marradia brand, starting with the original stage play Mad Mel and the Marradians, which I then adapted into a radio series last fall. Along with my co-writer Dr. Ilil Arbel, we've launched a line of Ancient Aliens: Marradians and Anunnaki books; the newest one, Extraterrestrial Gods, Religions and Mystical Practices, will be out July 10 - what is God like on other planets? If you believe in God and believe He created the Universe, then you must believe He also created other life forms. What is an extraterrestrial religion like? We use the alien races Anunnaki (referred to as Nephalim in the Hebrew Bible) and Marradians to explore that question.

WHAT'S NEXT

Busy summer! I return to Earth for my new drama, Saving Stan, about friendship, greed, love and death, which premieres at the Broadway Bound Festival August 3August 4 and August 7, starring Carlo Fiorletta, Olivia Baseman and Jordan Auslander, directed by Simcha Borenstein. And next March 2018, BHC Press will publish my fifth novel, A Mound Over Hell, set in 2098 following America's defeat in World War Three, where the disgraced sport of baseball begins its final season ever, only to become a pawn in global political intrigue. Combining the genres of baseball and science fiction is rare, but those are two of my loves. Along with theater.
