ARABIAN GULF - Hull Maintenance  (SW/PJ) Jason Shirey, from Moncks Corner, South Carolina, a graduate of Macedonia High School, has been in the Navy 19 years. Shirey is stationed with Assault Craft Unit Five (ACU 5), which is currently embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), and deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Born to Stephen and Eveland Shirey, Jason has four children of his own; two daughters, Alyssa and Madison, and two sons, Jason Jr., and Johnny.

Shirey serves as an engineer aboard one of ACU 5's landing craft air-cushions (LCAC).

"My father served 20 years in the Navy and was the first LCAC engineer ever in the Navy, which is where I get my inspiration from to carry on the legacy," said Shirey.

The Navy's LCACs are used for a variety of missions including cargo and personnel transport and humanitarian assistance.

"I enjoy the camaraderie of the all-enlisted LCAC crew," said Shirey

Shirey said he joined the Navy to serve his country and as a way to take care of his family. He is approaching military retirement and plans to work as a 1st assistant engineer for Military Sealift Command after his Navy career.

The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
